Country Clubs. You’re picturing manicured lawns, tennis whites, golf courses and valet parking aren’t you….I also know you’re thinking “Jonny! You are far too cool to be a country club photographer”.

You’re right. I’m far too cool…But Clapton Country Club is not your ordinary, run of the mill country club. It’s industrial. It’s full of personality. It’s in the heart of London. And it’s right up my street. If you’re after somewhere quirky, alternative and urban then I’m going to take a wild guess and say it’ll be right up your street too.

Clapton Country Club have taken the idea of a members only, well to do club and turned it on its head. No need to break out your ‘golf club casual wear’ or work out how to tie a tie. Instead this is a little oasis in the centre of Clapton. An urban retreat, filled with plants, salvaged decor and recycled furniture. There are nooks and crannies, large open spaces and an ‘anything goes’ vibe.

Like all things London there is a lot of history in this ex Tram Depot. The land it was built on has seen it all. From Kings (that Tudor “advocate for a good marriage”, Henry VIII) to gangsters – The Krays were notorious around these parts. Clapton Country Club was originally a horse drawn tram depot. The old stables are now The Department for Life (more on that excellently named space in a bit) while the main hub of the depot is where the Main Hall is situated. You can still see part of the old tram tracks under the floorboards.

During the Second World War the tram depot was commissioned as a factory, making aircraft parts. It took a direct hit during bombing raids and the newly rebuilt section of the Depot is the main entrance to Clapton Country Club. Air raid shelters were built inside the Depot, one of which is now a toilet in the Rear Studio!

The brilliant Terence and Hilary got married there in 2015, creating a little pop up venue in a small section of the depot. They realised they had hit upon a fab new venture and since then around 150 weddings have taken place at the Country Club.

And why the name? It’s a slightly sardonic nod to the potted history of Clapton. This area of London really has seen it all and come full circle. Royalty may not reside in Clapton anymore but the community have worked hard to shake off the notorious Murder Mile moniker and embrace the re-gentrification of Clapton. This district is now a ‘cool kid on the block’ with hipster coffee shops, indie cinemas and some very quirky eateries.

Weddings at Clapton Country Club

Located just off the A107 - basically Clapton high street - a tumbledown brick wall signposts the way to the “TRAM DEPOT” while a cobbled walkway leads to the warehouse style venue.
