Chateau de Berne | Lorgues | Provence | France
The wonderful Château de Berne is around an hour and a half scenic drive from Nice. Being situated just outside the provencal town of Lorgues you get to soak up incredible Cote d’Azur views as you climb high into the hills. It’s pretty much a text book dream destination wedding venue. I’ve done a handful of destination weddings and this place is right up there with them all. Indeed Château de Berne defines a remarkable 18th century castle wedding venue with the Brucie bonus of its own vineyard. Set deep in the glorious Var region of the South of France there is no better place to sit, admire the view and sample it’s own produce- world renown Rose wine. Since coming back home I now always notice the distinctive square shaped bottles sitting in the aisles of supermarkets and on the shelves of off-licenses. Apparently the vineyards here had sat unloved from 1985 until an Englishman bought it in 1995, replanted 32 hectares, modernised the wine-making facilities and rebuilt the cellars. I’d like to shake this man’s hand. It is also an interesting fact that this same businessman patented the contact lens. He went on to develop a hotel concept based around wine-tasting and visiting vineyards, now known as wine tourism. So Chateau de Berne is literally the birth of wine tourism as we know it. And who wouldn’t want to get married somewhere with an accolade like that?!
